About the Loire Valley
The region known as the Loire Valley is a delicious patchwork of sleepy rivers and green vineyards, but perhaps best known for some of France’s most remarkable architectural treasures. Renowned for its sumptuous châteaux, the Loire valley is rich in both history and architecture. Set in the restful surroundings of gentle green countryside, with extensive woods and meandering rivers, the history and architecture of many of the châteaux in the Loire valley region can often best be appreciated after dark in one of the evocative "Son et Lumière" shows. The area is famous for its rich supply of chateaux, with over three hundred of them, often built alongside a river or buried deep within the countryside. This is also an important wine-making area, although at first glance there appears to be little evidence of the industry, you are more likely to see fields of sunflowers or wheat than rows of vineyards here.
The heart of the châteaux country is Tours with surely the greatest concentration of palatial houses anywhere in the world, mostly built on the whim of successive monarchs as country retreats. The history and architecture of many of the châteaux can often best be appreciated after dark in one of the evocative "Son et Lumière" shows and if you feel like a break from this rich cultural diet the Atlantic beaches of the Vendée are under two hours drive away.Due to its central location, culture and fine cuisine, Tours is the natural visitor's capital. Angers is a close second, but more authentic are the historic towns of Amboise, Blois, Saumur (troglodyte caves) and Beaugency, strung out like jewels along the river. This is the classic Loire valley, a château trail that embraces the Renaissance gardens of Villandry and the fairytale turrets of Azay-le-Rideau. Visit the superb late Renaissance châteaux of Amboise and Chenonceaux, other beautiful châteaux such as Valençay, Cour Cheverny, Azay le Rideau and Villandry - as well as the great palaces of Blois and Chambord further east.
Venture northwards and the cathedral cities of Le Mans and Chartres reign supreme, their medieval centres bordered by Gallo-Roman walls. Nantes, in the west is a breezy, forward-looking port and gateway to the Atlantic. Southwards, the windswept Vendée is edged by a wild, sandy coastline that is perfect for windsurfers and nature lovers alike. There are 130 cycling circuits in the Loire Valley, ranging from the cathedral city of Chartres in the north to Orleans and on to Chateauroux in the south; ask for the Velo Bleu, Velo Vert brochure at tourist offices. Also popular in the many forested regions are horseback riding tours. The Loire Valley is rich in history and architecture, and is famous for its numerous chateaux. Around Saumur you will find troglodyte dwellings, which are houses built into the side of cliffs, and where many people still live today. There are many concerts and festivals held in spring and summer each year throughout the Loire Valley region..
